ACES HIGH by Alan Clark Published by Cassell & Co. ISBN 0 304 35225 X "This powerful account of war in the air on the Western Front during the First World War is by the distinguished military historian and well known politician, Alan Clark. Covering fighting squadrons on both sides of the conflict, Aces High captures the lives of idealistic young men who joined the air services in the early months of the war, who, if they survived, grew into the embittered but courageous aces of 1916 and 1917 - men like Manfred von Richthofen, Albert Ball, Mick Mannock, Georges Guynemer, Charles Nungessor and Raol Lufbery More than a chronicle of aerial warfare during five turbulent years, Aces High is a highly illustrated and exciting account of men at war in the skies and an illuminating survey of the tactics and strategies that led to ultimate Allied victory. Originally published in 1973, this new edition includes eighty new photographs and illustrations."
DEATH'S MEN by Denis Winter Published by Penguin Books ISBN 0 14 016822 2 "Denis Winter has taken the First World War away from the politicians and generals and given it back to the men who fought it, and, through their words, to us." This is a comprehensive look at all aspects of the War from the soldier's perspective with chapters covering such areas as "Trench life", "The weapons of trench warfare", "The strain of trench warfare", "Battle", "After Battle", "Home Leave", and "After the war". I highly recommend this book as a good overview of a soldiers life (and death) in the Great War, though it is from the British perspective.
FLESH IN ARMOUR by Leonard Manning My copy published by Unwin Paperbacks in 1985 ISBN 0 86861 758 X "Flesh in Armour is the graphic and compelling story of what it was like to be a soldier in the bloodbath of World War One. The vast and chaotic landscape of the Western Front is seen through the eyes of three Australian soldiers: Frank Jeffreys, sensitive and unable to bear the strains of war; Charl Bentley, untroubled by the complexities that surround them all; and Jim Blount, who finds his true self - and dies in action. It is a novel of heroic deeds - and the sheer struggle for survival in the senseless carnage of Europe at war. Leonard Mann fought in the mud and destruction of Flanders, and this unerringly accurate novel bears the unmistakable ring of truth."
TO THE LAST RIDGE by W.H. Downing Published by Duffy & Snellgrove ISBN 1 875989 65 X "This moving account recalls in an honest and personal way the ordinary soldier's experience of one of the most horrific series of battles ever fought. Although less well known than Gallipoli, the Western Front involved many more Australians, who played a vital role in breaking the German Line in 1918. Downing describes the mud, the rats and the deaths, but also the humour and the heroism of one of the most compelling periods in Australia's history Walter Downing was a Melbourne law student before fighting on the Western Front in World War 1, when he won the Military Medal. This book was acclaimed, on its original publication in 1920 for its literary quality and its realism."
THE GIANT BOOK OF TRUE WORLD WAR ONE STORIES Published by The Book Company ISBN 1 85487 698 9 "The Giant Book of True World War One Stories contains sixty persnal accounts from the greatest war the world had known. It is a fascinating record of eyewitness accounts of some of the bloodiest battles of the conflict, including Loos, Mons, Ypres and the Somme, from the opening moves through to the day peace was signed. These gripping and moving accounts recall all aspects of the war: the war in the air, the war at sea, conflict in the East, as well as the role played by women. But most stories are of life in the trenches, of danger, the discomfort, the fear and courage shown by men living the hell of life at the front line."
