This page is for a few personal items that relate to the Great War and that I hope will be of interest. The links at the bottom are to pages showing photographs of two recent visits I made to battlefields of The Great War.

These five postcards were sent by my Great Grandfather serving with the Royal Enginners in France (17th Division) to my Grandfather. The one with the picture of a soldier is actually a Christmas 1919 card from the 17th Division. 40miles and still going it declares (in two months!)

This is my Great Grandfather. The picture was taken in the early 1930's when he was in his late fifties. A typical Yorkshire man - his main hobby was breeding and racing pigeons.

He actually volunteered in 1915 at the age of 38. Despite having one child. He considered the pay and conditions were better in the army than working at his job as a bricklayer in Leeds! In the Engineers he would have been involved in trench digging wiring and construction of dugout etc. He told his son that he built massive brick ovens in the base camp at one stage.
This one was sent on my Grandads 10th birthday in1917. There is a small card inside on which a birthday message is written.
This type of card was apparently very popular with British troops. It shows all the Allies flags - this one must have been sent before 1917 as no American flag is shown.
Again this card has a small insert written on by Great Grandad. He survived the war and died in 1940. My father remembers him as a small chap who sat in front in of the fire spitting into it all day!
